Culinary Arts (ROC)

Description: This course offers advanced levels of quantity cooking with emphasis on sanitation, safety, equipment use and care, and basic mathematical skills needed for a kitchen or bake shop. Students will gain practical experience by working in a commercial kitchen and off-site catering.

Regional Occupational Program (ROP)

The Oakland Unified School District Regional Occupational Program (ROP) offers high quality career development and technical job training in a wide variety of occupational specialties designed to most the increasing demands of an ever-changing job market. The ROP is intended for all ability level students, not just vocationally oriented ones. The programs provide students with insights and the necessary skills needed for continued success as entry level employees and also for advanced training as technology changes and improve.

Research Design Writing

Prerequisites: This class is designed for seniors who will be working on senior projects and need additional time and support.
Description: Students will learn to create research projects meeting entry level undergraduate expectations.
Topic selection, source identification and gathering, research, note card creation, thesis development, outlining, writing, revision, editing, preparation for publication, presenting the research project.

Concurrent Enrollment Program at the Peralta Colleges (Laney, Alameda, Merritt, Vista)

High School students are admitted on a part-time basis on the recommendation of their principal, with parental and counselor consent. These students are exempt from paying nonresident tuition when enrolled for high school credit. Students may take up to 6.0 community college units per semester. A 3-unit community college course is equivalent to 5 units of high school credit.

Adult School Program

Limited enrollment for high school students who apply with a completed “Application to enroll in Adult Classes Form.” High school students must be accompanied by a parent, if under the age of 18. High school students may take one course only.

Drivers Education

Prerequisites: At least 15 years of age and in the ninth grade.
Description: This class is offered during A period. The class consists of theories and laws of driving an automobile. Students are trained to pass the examination for instruction permit. There are four sessions per academic year (8 weeks each). There is no course credit given for this class.

Peer Tutoring

Tutor training involves the following: Orientation to Tutoring, Developing Helping Relationships in Tutoring, Communication Skills, Behavior Management, Principles of Education as Applied in Tutoring, Roles, Responsibilities and Procedures in Tutoring, How to Tutor in Content Areas, Record-keeping, and Evaluation Tools.

Outside Work Experience (OWE)

Prerequisites: Must be 16 years of age and have a paid job. Enrollment requires approval of parent/guardian, employer, counselor, and the OWE coordinator.
Description: Students arc expected to complete one period a week of classroom instruction. The focus of the instruction will be on employability skills. In most cases, the class will be scheduled for an A period. A student who works 20 hours a week per semester can earn 10 credits. A student who works at least 10 hours a week can earn five credits a semester.
