Tutors in the After School Peer-Tutoring Program provide academic assistance to fellow students

The Oakland Technical High School Alumni and Library Fund is a non-profit California Corporation originally created to address funding and budget cuts that put the school library, and thus the school, in danger of it losing its accreditation standards. A hard core base of Tech Alumni from the 1950’s formed the fund, contacted other alumni, and solicited donations which allowed the library to make the necessary upgrades and purchases and secured the accreditation.

With the library temporarily in good shape, the fund turned its attention to the job of raising the academic standards of Tech and how it could assist in achieving this goal. Thus the peer-tutoring program was born through the financial assistance of the fund. The program is an after school program where advanced placement students are paid tutors. Certain coaches of Tech athletic teams made the program mandatory for their student-athletes, and there was a dramatic rise in grade point average as a result. Having the athletes participate made the program more acceptable and attractive to many other students, who achieved similar results.

Like all programs, this one costs money and is sustained by donations from former “Technites.” Tax deductible donations are accepted. A donation is a way to show your appreciation of the education and experiences you enjoyed during your years at Tech. Donations can be sent to:
