The mission of the After School Tutoring Program is to provide a safe and nurturing environment for students to build good habits around completing all homework assignments and to request and receive support in all academic areas offered at Tech. Tutoring is offered Monday through Thursday from 3:30 until 5:30 p.m. All students are encouraged to attend the program. The tutoring program assists many athletes in maintaining the grades required for participation in their sport. (See interview with the football coach.)

The Twenty-first Century Grant and our Alumni and Library Fund jointly fund the program. We provide snacks and pay the peer-tutors. The 21st Century Fund pays for the teachers and special T-shirts identifying the tutors.

Mr. Carlos Carmona is in charge of the program. He screens and hires the peer-tutors and arranges for training at the beginning of the year. Through the year he guides and helps them with teaching techniques. When our Alumni and Library Board observed the program and met some of the tutors we were impressed with their maturity, skills and enthusiasm.

Teachers note that  students who attend the  program show improved  study habits.  Students  who are not doing well  academically can now be  referred directly to the  program.

Tech’s tutoring program has been very successful.  With open enrollment city wide, Tech has the reputation of being the best high school. We are very proud to be a part of this success.
