The Oakland Tech Girls Varsity Lacrosse team starts the 2013 season with 5 wins and 3 losses. Fielding a team of 25 girls including 11 returning seniors and 10 new players (9 freshmen!), the team is on course to be highly competitive in their northern California league. The head coach is Maya Semans with assistant coach Ellen Fisher. The girls prepared for the season with a lacrosse clinic at UC Berkeley’s Memorial Stadium in January as well as a memorial tournament hosted by the Petaluma Lacrosse Club.
The team took this week’s loss to San Jose 4-12 in stride, recognizing there are plenty of games yet to play. Two goals each were made by Cecilia Seiter and Rachel Loo. Olivia Branch made 8 saves. A double header is coming up this weekend.

The three Oakland Tech lacrosse teams, Boys Varsity, Girls Varsity, and Boys Junior Varsity are club teams belonging to the Oakland Lacrosse Club of the Northern California Junior Lacrosse Association (NCJLA). Preparing for the coming 2013 lacrosse season in the spring, Kevin Kelley, the new Tech Junior Varsity lacrosse coach, orchestrated a lacrosse clinic reaching out to the various players, coaches and teams that play lacrosse in the local East Bay area. Lacrosse players from middle school through high school were invited to attend from the Oakland Lacrosse Club (which includes Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) middle school players and Oakland Tech and Skyline high school players.) Players from other local clubs also came from Skyline (Piedmont), Berkeley, Alameda, Pleasanton, and Fremont.

Oakland Tech Lacrosse players participated in a lacrosse clinic hosted by UC Berkeley at the newly renovated Memorial Stadium. The clinic was organized by the Oakland Lacrosse Club and lead by coaches and players of Cal’s Men’s and Women’s Lacrosse teams in January 2013. (Photo by Matthew Szymankowsk)
The players were divided by age, and lacrosse skill level. Over 75 players were broken up into pods of 6 to 8 players rotating to different drill stations set up on the turf. Intermediate players did sets of passing on the run in figure eights as well as give and go shooting to goal. The more experienced players got plenty of repetitions passing and rapid shooting to goal from 7 yards and 15 yards–right and left handed. Since the clinic was led by Cal players and coaches, the high school players got a taste of what it means to be in a disciplined fast pace practice session.
Parents got to walk around the newly renovation Memorial Stadium after sipping a local café latte and sitting in the sun. The clinic ended with some quick scrimmages on short fields and goals set up across the stadium. The Tech players and coaches hope this clinic will be an annual event. (Photo by Matthew Szymankowsk)

The Girls Varsity Lacrosse team won two games in a doubleheader on Sunday, March 24, 2013 with victories of 10-5 overOrangevale, and 13-3 over Woodcreek, increasing their club league standings and record to 5-1. In the first game, the senior leadership set the tone of the day with crisp passing, catching on the run, and crafting plays to score goals. Good communication and strategic field positioning were key in this game. The scoring was led by team captains Grace Wong, Elisabeth Opdyke, and Cecilia Seiter who combined to make 7 goals and 3 assists. One goal was scored by Monica Branch, and two goals were scored by Sophia Grossman who also made two assists. One assist was made by freshman Tasha Dean. Goalie Olivia Butler called out the defense and made 10 saves. It was a beautiful sunny day on Al Kyte Field to host these two teams from Sacramento. After getting some nourishment of homemade sandwiches and some Jamba Juice, the Bulldogs went on to their second win of the day – a game in which Monica Branch was on fire with 6 goals, including a fancy behind-the-back shot.

The Boys Varsity Lacrosse 2013 season is off to a strong 4-2 start. The Varsity squad is fielding a team of 26 Boys with 10 returning seniors and 4 freshmen. Many of the boys prepared for the season with a lacrosse clinic at UC Berkeley Memorial Stadium in January, as well as a local tournament with mini games against Berkeley and Bishop O’Dowd high schools. During the fall, many of the boys kept up their conditioning and sticks skills by playing indoor lacrosse, a quick paced short variation of field lacrosse.
There are 13 lacrosse home games at the Oakland Tech Bulldog Stadium including the Boys Varsity, Jr. Varsity, and Girls Varsity teams during March and April. Concessions will be available for the purchase of hot dogs, hamburgers, drinks, Bulldog lacrosse booster-wear, and a raffle with door prizes! Tell your friends to come out and support Tech’s lacrosse teams, and learn more about this exciting and fast-growing sport. Check the updated lacrosse scores and game schedules on the Tech Athletic website.

This year Oakland Tech’s Girls Lacrosse Team has been greatly improved over the last two years since they have been in the club and they are finally starting to win some games. The team is made up from two freshman, several great sophomores and juniors and a handful of strong seniors. While some members of the team have played team lacrosse for years, there are several members who had barely held a lacrosse stick prior to try-outs.
The team, being a club team, has to travel for most of their games that are played on the weekends in varying locations. The scores of their past few games are as follows:
3/24 At Morgan Hill: Oakland Tech 12, Washington HS Eagles 5; Oakland Tech 12, Morgan Hill Clovers 7
3/31 At Rohnert Park: Casa Grande 13, Oakland Tech 5; Oakland Tech 13, Rancho 7
4/15 At Redding: Oakland Tech 7, Chico Rebels 4; Redding Wildfire 13, Oakland Tech 6
4/21 At Oakland: Oakland Tech 8, Washington Eagles 6; Petaluma 10, Oakland Tech 4
Next weekend in Petaluma the team will face off with Casa Grande (the strongest of the club teams in Oakland Tech’s Division) along with the Morgan Hill Clovers.

Last Saturday (March 3rd), on their home field, the Oakland Tech girl’s lacrosse team played in the first tournament of the season. The first game was against San Jose High School. Oakland Tech played a hard game, ending the first half in a tie, 5 – 5. The second half was a battle as the Tech girls fought hard but fell short 8 – 13, with San Jose taking home the win. This didn’t stop the girls, however: in the second game, OT dominated against Rancho High School, pulling out a 12 – 5 victory! Congrats to Rachel Loo, who was on fire and scored 4 of the 8 points in the first half. Quite a few of the players on the team also scored their first goals, including some girls playing in their first game ever! Congratulations to a great start of the season, OT girls!
