Staff Bulletin – January 24, 2011

PLEASE READ:

On Friday afternoon, Jan. 21, there was a “Pro-life”-Anti-abortion demonstration by an outside organization that took place in front of the school on Broadway and on 42^nd St. The participants in this demonstration were not affiliated with OUSD or Oakland Tech. They were on the sidewalk, which is public property, and not on school property.  I want to commend our students and staff for your respectful and thoughtful engagement in civil discourse with this organization. Although the demonstrators used disturbing and graphic images which were upsetting to many students, family and staff, our 1^st Amendment protects the right to free speech and peaceful assembly and this group was legally exercising these rights.

Many students shared their shock, confusion and questioned, “why Tech ?” and may want to speak further about this incident.  It is an opportunity to discuss our 1^st amendment rights as well as to listen to our student’s thoughts as they seek understanding of why a group such as this might decide to come to Oakland Tech.

1. CAHSEE Boot Camp: the last CAHSEE Boot Camp will be held this Saturday, 1/29 from 8:30-12:00. Study sessions are open to 10-12 graders. Please let your students know about this last CAHSEE prep session.  Our students appreciate your effort and care!
2. Semester Exams: copies were due on Friday. If you have not already done so, please submit your semester final exams to Ms. Andujar today.

Please adhere to the finals schedule and use discretion when a student requests permission to leave the classroom. It is critical that we maintain a testing environment free from interruptions and distractions.

1. Youth Truth Survey: The Leadership class will be assisting with conducting an OUSD web-based survey to students to elicit their feedback on their educational experience and ideas for school improvement. There is a short timeline (completion by February 11^th), in the midst of many other important events and activities; however, I ask that you support this effort. Thank you.
2. Congratulations to Coach Ashlee Sherman and son, Craig Sherman (Class of 2010). Coach Sherman was recently inducted into the Wrestling Hall of Fame and Craig took 3^rd in a state-wide Junior College wrestling competition.

Information Hallway: Please do not post flyers around the school. The Information Hallway, located on the 1^st floor is the central location for postings. We are currently working on developing an efficient process for posting and removing informational flyers.  In the meantime, you can post class specific news on the appropriate bulletin board.
