Tech Students Shine at Competitions
The end of the 2011 school year has seen an amazing run of superior achievement by many Oakland Tech student programs in local competitions. These Bulldog Champions exemplify our students’ incredible dedication, intellect and perseverance, as well as the school’s commitment to excellence in all areas of endeavor: academics, performing arts, and sports.
Bulldogs win 2nd Straight OAL Title
Congratulations to Varsity Baseball Coach Eric Clayton, his coaches and players for their second consecutive OAL Championship. The Bulldogs only loss in league play came against Skyline following two victories over the Titans.
Oakland Tech will now play in the Transbay Tournament against the Washington Eagles beginning Wednesday, May 18, at San Francisco State. The teams will play a three-game series, with the second game at Rickey Henderson Field on Friday, May 20. The third game, if necessary, will take place at a date and location to be determined.
And finally, a shout-out to Senior James Harris who was selected one of the Bay Area News Group East Bay Athletes of the Year. James, who was an All-OAL selection in basketball, is being closely followed for his exploits on the baseball field, as well, with 15 to 20 scouts from major league teams following his season.
Tech Orchestra Wins Gold
On May 6, 2011, Tech’s Orchestra joined ensembles from around the Bay Area at a grand performance at Milpitas High School. At an award ceremony the following day at Great America’s Music in the Parks, our musicians were delighted to be awarded the first place trophy for High School Full Orchestra! Congratulations to all our talented musicians and to David Byrd, our music teacher and conductor!
Oakland Tech Team Wins Robotics Competition
Oakland Tech Computer Academy students won first place honors in the Pioneers In Engineering High Schools Robotics Competition on Saturday, April 23 at the University of California Berkeley. Three Tech teams competed against high school teams from Acalanes, Albany, Berkeley, Head-Royce, Ralph J. Bunche, Bishop O’Dowd, Pinole Valley, El Cerrito (with two teams). Congratulations to the first place Computer Academy team: Calvin Cheng, Michael Andermeskel, Jan Ernest Paguyo, Minh Nyugen, Baxter Schumacher, Quang Bui, Ka Lun Lee, Elias Martinez, Jason Tan, Victor Perez, Jonathan Fratti, Henry Foster, Michael Andemeskel. Oakland Tech Girls take 1st place in Iridescent’s Technovation Challenge
This spring, 42 high-school girls took part in Google’s challenge to build the most innovative Google Android mobile app. We are proud to announce that on Wednesday, May 4th the Berkeley area winning team came from Oakland Tech, defeating teams from seven other schools! Congratulations to Salina Wittmer (grade 10), Carmen Zheng (grade 10) and Saleeha Bey (grade 9) who will now move on to the National Competition! They will compete against teams from NY, LA, SF, and Mountain View (2 sites) on May 21, where the grand prize is professional app development and distribution on the Android Marketplace. Boys JV Lacrosse Team Advances to Semi-Finals, May 15
Congratulations to the Boys JV Lacrosse team for winning their NCJLA quarter final playoff game last Saturday at an exciting home game against the Granite Bay Grizzles from the Sacramento area, with a final score of 11-8. The JV team moves on to the semi-finals next Sunday May 15 4:00 pm at Treasure Island, playing against Pleasant Grove Eagles, also from the Sacramento area. Come out to Treasure Island and cheer on the Tech Bulldogs!
Boys Tennis Team Wins OAL Title
The Oakland Tech Boys Tennis Team won the Oakland Athletic League (OAL) Title on Tuesday May 3rd, 2011 with a 6-1 victory over Skyline. Skyline had won the OAL Title for the past four years. The Boys Tennis Team will now go on to represent the OAL in the Northern California High School Tennis Tournament on May 20-21, 2011 in Sacramento. The tennis team is coached by Mr. Marlin Eagles.
