Oakland Tech’s school community is served by two full time nurses dedicated to maximizing the health, safety and well-being of roughly 2,000 students. In addition to their medical duties, our nurses also coordinate a variety of programs aimed at providing real, transformative services for Bulldogs in need. Here is a heartening end-of-year update on how those programs served our students throughout the 2017-18 school year:

Vision to Learn — which provides free eye screenings and free eye glasses to students — eye screened 102 Bulldog students total, which resulted in 65 students being prescribed free glasses. Thank you to the Tech community whose cooperation made this possible, especially Mr. Frey who graciously has allowed VTL to use his classroom outlet through the entire year. Thank you as well to all the teachers whose class was disrupted by students being called out to be screened or receive glasses.

The Backpack Program has distributed 990 bags of non-perishable food to students and families with food insecurity this year. The Backpack Program not only supports Tech, but also families at Emerson and Claremont. This program has been strongly supported by parent volunteers whose help has been invaluable. Tech has been approved to continue this program for the 2018-2019 school year. Please look for updates regarding enrollment in the program here on the website and in the weekly Bullhorn. Here is an updated electronic enrollment form and here is volunteer sign-up form for those interested in helping pack and deliver backpacks to locations throughout Tech, as well as to Emerson and Claremont schools.

The Bulldog Closet received an overwhelming response during this years annual donation drive. Thank you so much to Tech families, alum and staff. The Bulldog Closet has been used more this year then in the years previous and donations have supported a large number of families not only at Tech, but at our sister schools Emerson and Claremont. Over $1200 was donated in grocery gift cards that were sent home with every family enrolled in the Backpack Program for the holiday break. Left over cards have been used to help students and families in crisis.  Additional funds were donated to the Bulldog Closet Amazon account that were able to be used to supply winter jackets, backpacks, and basic school supplies.

Also a special thank you to parents, alum, and staff that reached out to offer their help to our community in special circumstances. Christmas presents, emergency funds, and clothing have been provided by these amazing individuals/groups.
