PTSA Membership Application 2011-12

The Parent, Teacher & Student Association (PTSA) funds special projects at Oakland Tech. This is in addition to the funds available through mini-grants. Maxi-grants are issued twice a year.

The goals of the PTSA maxi-grants are:

  • Provide momentum for projects that are not able to access other monies
  • Seed a valuable new experience for students
  • Make a capital improvement that can be enjoyed by the larger community
  • Facilitate attracting other funds from other sources

Grant Range: Up to $2,500

Applications Due: Spring cycle February 2 by 4pm in the PTSA mail box or via electronic mail.

To be eligible,

  • YOU MUST BE A PTSA MEMBER TO APPLY FOR THIS GRANT.

    If you are not currently a member, you may download the 2011-12 Membership Application. PTSA membership form and membership fee may be submitted with the Maxi-Grant application.
  • Submit your completed application by the due date by email to ptsapresident@oaklandtech.com (or put it in the PTSA box in the Main Office if electronic submission is not possible). Late proposals will not be considered.

How to apply? Complete the Spring 2012 Maxigrant Application (download from link above). Proposal not to exceed three pages.

Proposals will be reviewed by the Executive Committee based on criteria, impact, need and thoughtfulness. Recommendations are submitted to a vote of the PTSA membership.

Approved Grants: Recipients sign an agreement with the PTSA for use of funds as appropriated and commit to writing a one-page summary report of work accomplished, how money was spent and the difference the grant made.

Grant disbursements are made: a) directly to the vendor, b) when receipt of purchase is provided to the treasurer, or c) by other arrangement as deemed appropriate by the Executive Committee.

Grants awarded:

  • Jazz Band Competitions – Transportation and lodging assistance to attend competitions locally and in Southern California.
  • Black Student Union – Funding to support the club’s trip to the Historically Black Colleges over spring break.
  • Classroom Supplies – Funds to purchase curricular supplies such as instructional materials, visual aids and science lab materials.
  • Girls Support Group – Staffing for weekly therapeutic support group for female students.
  • Paidea – Stipends for UC Graduate Student readers to assist faculty with reading and critiquing student writing assignments.
  • Physical Education – Purchase assistive swim devices for special education students.

2009-10

  • Journalism Club—Support for the growing Journalism Club that last year revitalized “The Scribe”—a digital camera for the photo journalists, reporter’s notebooks, and a scanner.
  • Oakland Tech Techies—Instructor stipend to help budding theater technicians to prepare and rehearse prior to performances. Formerly funded through the 21st Century grant, which has been drastically reduced.
  • Lacrosse Club—League fees for the new lacrosse club, introducing this sport that’s rapidly rising in national popularity to Tech.
  • Technology in Mathematics— Geometry and algebra teacher Tuyet-Linh Phan proposed integrating technology into the math curriculum to make it more comprehensive and stimulating. The grant is for a laptop, document reader, and graphing calculators.
  • African American Student Action Planners—Funding for transportation for a college campus tour to increase the college-going culture for African American students.
  • Reinvigorating campus green spaces—Campus beautification project next to the girl’s gym that will replace dirt with trees and landscaping.
  • Showcasing student art—Art teacher Renita Brooks-Pines will use her grant to display student artwork in the halls, promoting student accomplishments while improving the school atmosphere.
  • Performance support—Stipends for teacher support during weekend rehearsal time.
  • Studio One collaboration—Enrich the Tech art program by using the photography and ceramics facilities and equipment at Studio One.
  • Physical Education & Wrestling Team—Purchase of a body fat analyzer to help students and the wrestling team meet physical fitness requirements and goals.
  • Polynesian Club—Support for this club whose purpose is for students to experience and explore the many cultures and lifestyles of Polynesia.
  • Close Up—Financial assistance for low-income students to attend this annual trip to Washington, D.C.
  • Oakland Tech Trails Club—Support for this new club that promotes students experiencing nature and the environment through overnight camping trips.
  • Counseling Department—Purchase of course-planning software that helps students to plan and achieve their educational objectives.
  • Tech Gardens—Overlap between the new Green Academy and the Beautification Committee to maintain the planters that were built last year outside the Science classrooms.
  • Heritage Photo Project—Mounting historical photos of Tech for display in Library.
  • Drama Program Support—To help defray costs of attending the Edinburgh Fringe Festival as part of the American High School Theater Festival.
  • Dance Week—Support to bring in dance teachers.
  • Mural Club—Enabling the creation of several new school murals.
  • 3-D Modeling Class—Support for this after-school class to teach students professional skills.
  • Macbook—Enabling government students to create videos.
  • Drafting Machines—For Engineering Academy.
