OakTechRep Memories From the Fringe

naomi-and-krystal-at-signpostOakTechRep’s cast and crew continue to write about their experience at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival:

This has been the best two weeks of my life. Ms. J had us running around Edinburgh to see shows we never thought of seeing before. It was crazy and hectic, especially tech rehearsal. I got only about two hours to make up lighting design and hoped for the best because I couldn’t and wouldn’t see the result of my hard work until the first day of our show; but the first hour of the rehearsal was just me getting to the know the lighting board. And heck I had a ton of fun doing that. The lighting board was so much better than the one we have at Tech. I wished I had a lot of time during rehearsal to see how far along my lighting design was so I could’ve fixed mistakes and touched up some lighting. This whole experience made me truly respect those who work in lighting design much more. The experience was totally different from what I usually get at Tech because at Tech whenever we have tech rehearsal it usually takes a whole day to do. But I did the impossible in Edinburgh, I made a lighting design in one hour!

When we arrived in the SFO airport [after the trip], it didn’t really feel like coming home. With a flight that long, I lost track of time altogether; when a meal came, I turned to the person next to me and said “Is this lunch or dinner?” We were above the clouds, so the sun didn’t really seem to set in the sky either way; it was just there, and we were just there, for a very long time, just thinking. We’d all settled in pretty quickly at Pollock Halls [in Edinburgh], learning which ways to look when crossing the street, what buses to take where, which venues to go to and how to get there. Everyone had their set routines for the days, and we had so much packed into them, that it seemed like a month and a day all at once. The trip wasn’t long enough for us; honestly, I don’t think that however long we stayed, it would have been for a long enough time. We ran around the last day screaming for joy about everything from cameras to dance crews. I travel a lot, so it’s not like it’s an “oh my god first time traveler” experience. But we got to actually take part in, and make an effect, in something big, something bigger than us, something that’s gonna stick around. It felt amazing, sort of like a home.

Hey everyone it’s Tenecia. The whole experience for me can’t really be described in words. I mean how do you really describe a life changing experience? I’m gonna try my best to explain it, it was a complete eye opener that brought me closer to friends and myself. I really do now think of the HBITB cast as family. Family is something that I never really had or really understood. But being around these 13 people for 9 months you start to form unbreakable bonds and stories and you start to feel and see a whole another happiness. The ending was a sad moment, to think after this some people like Marcus, Keyera, Scott and Sabella will be leaving. That just added to the moment, to the show, to our energy because we had to make every moment with them last and drag. Therefore no matter how tired we were – and we were – we had something great pushing us. And no matter what, there will never be an experience like this, where we get to meet new people, we get to see so much talent that inspires us, all in another country, and there will never be a family like HBITB.
