Summary of Oakland Tech Auditorium Renovation Project
Goal: Update Oakland Technical High School’s Auditorium into a state of the art facility.
Cost of Project: $1.2 million.
Project Development/Management: Oakland Tech Performing Arts Committee (OTPAC) includes parents, administrators, teachers, and community members with experience in theater design, construction, development, technical theater and project management.
Background: Oakland Tech is a school of 1,700 students. 59% qualify for free or reduced lunch. 52% are African-American, 18% Asian, 15% Latino, 10% white, and 5% other.
Auditorium: Built in the early 1960′s, the 927 seat space has a good basic layout, large stage, ample room for a scene shop, dressing rooms and adjacent classrooms.
When the school was modernized in 2005-2006, the auditorium received only limited work. Interior and exterior doors were replaced, bathrooms renovated and a lift was installed to give access to the stage and be ADA compliant. Otherwise, it was left virtually the same as when opened in the early 1960′s.
Plan: OTPAC determined the scope of the work in consultation with experts in acoustics, lighting, color and sound. The result was a sequenced plan in three phases that reduces interruption to student learning and achieves a state of the art facility in a cost effective approach.
Phase 1, 2006 – 2008:
Summary: Replace stage curtains, partial seat replacement, new dance floor & portable sound system.
Phase 1 has been completed.
Phase 2, 2009 – 2011:
Summary: Acoustic enhancements, lighting and sound upgrade, painting of auditorium and lobby
Estimated cost of Phase 3: $544,80. Current funding needed: $355,000 to complete Phase 2

Phase 3, 2012 – 2014:
Summary: Complete seat replacement, develop black box theater, restore grand piano, install exterior lighting & marquee.
Estimated cost of Phase 3: $522,250
