Phase 1: Accomplished!
Phase 1 of the auditorium renovation, completed between 2006 – 2008, included replacing the torn and decrepit stage curtains; replacing/upgrading the worst of the auditorium’s broken and torn seats; purchasing a new portable dance floor and sound system, both of which can be brought out and used when they are needed; purchasing much-needed stage lighting; and building a locked cabinet for Tech’s grand piano.
Individuals, Foundations, the Oakland School District and State of California contributed $125,000 to make the improvements in Phase 1.
Phase 2
Phase 2 of the auditorium renovation plan is scheduled to run from 2009 – 2011. It includes making any necessary repairs to the rigging, purchasing and installing a sound system, making desperately needed acoustic enhancements, upgrading the dimmer board and lighting instruments, constructing a sound and lighting booth, installing a backstage monitoring system, painting the auditorium, and painting the lobby and creating a gallery space/showcase for Tech’s visual arts students and for the gorgeous posters for Tech’s drama productions and photos from performing arts productions over the years.

The total cost of Phase 2 is estimated at $544,800. We currently need $355,000 to complete Phase 2.

It’s been a fabulous year for the arts at Tech, and now it’s time to clean up and continue our work making the auditorium and the arts work spaces even better. We’re having an Auditorium Work Day on June 9 and we need everyone to help – and that means you! Bring your friends and family (not little kids who need supervision, though, please). Auditorium work days accomplish a lot and are actually a lot of fun.
Please bring work gloves if you have them.
2012 began with a flurry of building and renovation in Tech’s auditorium and in Room A3, the Drama classroom. Volunteer contractors, parents and students joined together to build a sound booth and paint the classroom’s proscenium stage and stage area.
Start your new year right – help in our ongoing Auditorium renovation project! There’s lots going on, and lots you can do!
During weekends in January and February, our fabulous volunteer parent contractors, Daniel Brekke, Brian Donaldson and Mark Elliott, will be building the new sound and lighting booth for the auditorium. We need volunteers to assist with both carpentry work AND general jobs that don’t require specialized skills (these jobs include protecting the auditorium seats with plastic, clean up, and donating lunch for our work crew). Tech is having an auditorium work day this Saturday, January 7, from 8 am to 4 pm. Please give whatever time you can — all day or just a few hours. We have lots of projects to tackle, including the exciting new sound/lighting booth.
Bring work gloves, brooms/broom shovels, paper towels/rags, and hand tools, if you have them. We need volunteers with carpentry skills, as well as volunteers who can do general manual jobs and provide food for lunch. Exciting news: the new acoustic sound panels that are a big part of the Auditorium Renovation process are about to be delivered!
We need your help – yes, YOUR help – to get the panels into the Auditorium and onto the stage. Please come to the Auditorium on Monday, October 10, 2011, at 8 a.m. Bring gloves and energy!

Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of Tech’s Class of 1961, our grand piano has been restored! This Steinway concert grand piano is a world-class instrument which was badly in need of TLC – which it received, thanks to Tech alumna Camille Reed and the Piano Committee.
On Saturday, September 17, 2011, 11 a.m. – 12 p.m., we will have a concert and Piano Dedication event for the newly restored grand piano. Please join us in the Auditorium and join in celebration!
