Dance Students Participate in Mills College Youth Exchange

The Mills College Dance Exchange program works to connect the company members with the youth community in the Oakland and Bay Area, and gives students the opportunity to experience live dance and be a part of the creative process.  Tech students will have a unique opportunity to see the groundbreaking artists of tomorrow perform the work of highly reputed choreographers and teachers.

Parent volunteers are needed to help drive carpools back from Mills at 4:00 p.m.

Tech Dance Students to See Alvin Ailey Dance Troupe

On March 15, 2012, Tech’s Dance students will make their annual field study to see the world-renowned Alvin Ailey Dance Troupe at Cal Performances.

This is listed as an all-day event because there are both afternoon and evening performances.  Parent volunteers will be needed at the end of the evening, around 10 p.m., to help drive students home in carpools.  Please let Ms. Travick know if you can help.

Tech at Carnaval in SF

Once again, Tech’s dancers will be participating in San Francisco’s fantastic celebration of Carnaval!

Current plans include collaborating with arts and community development organization Loco Bloco.  Loco Bloco uses the arts as a tool for the empowerment of youth of color to overcome injustice; to adopt healthy, active lifestyles; to contribute positively to and serve as leaders in their communities; and to embrace ethnic and cultural diversity.  Their programs incorporate social, artistic and physical goals, encouraging youth to perceive themselves as direct contributors to their neighborhood’s cultural-wellness and social vitality.  Learn more about Loco Bloco.

Lahydi African Dance Conference

Tech will be hosting a truly special event: the Lahydi West African Dance Conference, hosted by Alseny Soumah and the Tech Dance Department.

This festival of African drum and dance classes is open to all levels of dance, beginner to advanced.  Free to Oakland Tech students, teachers and staff with ID.

National Dance Week: SF Flash Mob Field Trip

So you’re watching a movie and someone starts to dance, and there’s music, and pretty soon everyone is dancing along and they all know the steps … and you think, “Right.  Sure.”

Well, Tech’s students are gonna make it happen (with a whole lot of other people) in SF’s Union Square on April 20.  It’s National Dance Week, and that means you gotta dance!

Dance Feeder School Presentation

On April 3, 2012, fourth-grade students from NHA will have the chance to see what it’s like to be a performing arts student at Oakland Tech. Students will tour the performing arts facilities; watch Tech’s students perform; perform for the Tech students; have lunch; and perform with Tech’s students in shared choreography.

On March 7, Tech’s 6th period dance class will participate in a Trinidadian Carnival performance with the group “Sistahs with Style.”  Other students may participate with invitation.

Dance Students at Youth Summit/Black Choreographers Festival

On February 12, Dance students have been invited to attend a Black Choreographers Moving Workshop and Performance at the Youth Summit for Pre-Professional Dance Companies at Laney College, 900 Fallon Street, Oakland (click here for a map).  This event is part of the highly acclaimed Black Choreographers Festival.

The students will have a full and amazing day, including movement and nutrition/injury prevention classes, lunch, a Visioning Session, dance workshops, tech and attending a show.

Please join us at the wonderful Conga Lounge on Wednesday, March 30th, 4 – 7:30pm.

The Conga Lounge will be donating 10% of the Happy Hour take to the Oakland Tech Dance program for
their Field Study Trip to NYC in May.

11 students will take dance classes with professional dance companies like Alvin Ailey, tour Radio City Music Hall and see three Broadway shows and much, much more.

Many of the students would otherwise be unable to make the trip without the fundraisers.

We will be having a volunteer work day this Saturday, January 8, from 10am-3pm.

Meet at the Auditorium to find out how you can help. Even just 30 minutes out of your day is extremely helpful. Plus, it’s a great opportunity to better get to know others in the community.

We will be sprucing up the Auditorium, organizing backstage areas, and helping with the needs of the Dance Studio.

Performing Arts Committee Retreat

All are welcome to the Performing Arts Committee Retreat, Sunday, October 3, 2010, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Teachers and parents will come together to talk about our plans and hopes for the Performing Arts Academy, the Drama, Dance and Music departments, and the Auditorium this coming year and in the future.

West African Dance Conference at Tech
