Jazz Band/Concert Band

It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing … and Tech’s bands swing.  And rock!

Tech’s Concert Band is open to all musicians, including ninth graders and qualified solo piano and guitar students.  In addition to jazz, the Band plays rock, pop, soul, funk, and more.  Students have the opportunity to perform in Tech’s Winter and Spring Concerts and in concerts and competitions in Oakland and around the Bay Area.

Tech’s Jazz Band has been getting quite a reputation in Oakland’s music community, and for good reason!  Tech students play in a variety of ensembles of various sizes and styles, from traditional big band swing to smaller ensembles, to modern and fusion jazz with electric instruments.  In academic year 2011-2012, Jazz Band will become an advanced-level class for students ready to play and improvise on a high level.  Auditions for the 2011-2012 school year will be held in May 2011.

Jazz Band Mentors at Cazadero Music Camp

young-musicians-outdoorsFrom October 1-3, 2010, as he has done each fall, Tech music teacher David Byrd brought a handpicked group of students to the prestigious and beautiful Cazadero music camp, to act as mentors in the “JumpStart in Music” program.

JumpStart in Music is an intensive three-day mini camp for approximately 150 students from six OUSD middle schools who have completed their first year in band or orchestra.  JumpStart in Music’s mission is to increase involvement of children in school music programs, build leadership in a cross-cultural program among an ethnically diverse student body, and build a sense of community among and between schools and school districts.

Mentors from Tech and Skyline helped the campers learn their music, played along with them, and joined with teachers to perform a concert for the campers.
