Tech Rowing Ends Season with Medals!

The Oakland Tech Rowing Team competed last weekend at the U17 West Coast Championship Regatta.  The racing marked the end of a productive season for the Bulldogs. Two of the five boats entered won medals. The U17 boys eight took gold and the U17 boys four finished in third place to secure the bronze.

This season was only the second year of competition for the Bulldogs and the first for the women’s team.  Coach Dees remarked, “We’ve got a really young team and some enthusiastic athletes.  I am proud of them because I’ve seen a lot of growth in these young men and women.  It’s not easy being the new kid on the block and yet they keep showing up and wanting more”.

Teamwork has been a big help to the team.  Almost everyday someone has had to switch roles or row on a side they are unfamiliar with; some even learned to scull.  Over the weekend Adani Harper rowed in two sculling events.  She was joined by Maya Cisneros for the U18 2x and by Sarah Barton for the U17 2x.  Both had spent only a handful of days rowing in sculling boats before venturing onto the racing lanes.  The opportunity drove them to push the learning curve as steep as they could during practice.  With each session they reported feeling more confident than when they had started and the theme continued through the regatta.  Much of the team is looking forward to learning to scull next year, in addition to trying sweep rowing on the other side.

Summer Plans?  This summer Coach Dees will be hosting a learn to row camp for new rowers (high school and middle school age), July 13-19.  The following week he will be putting on a rowing development camp for rowers with one year of experience or more, July 20-24.  Sessions will be in the afternoons and are tentatively scheduled for 1-4pm. Look for more information soon!
