Shadow Day (2009)

Experience a day in the life of a student at Oakland Tech:

Your child can spend a day at Oakland Tech “shadowing” a current Tech student.

Who can shadow? Shadow days are available to students who will be in high school next year. Shadow visits are not mandatory, and in fact some students feel awkward about shadowing another student. Please consult with your child before requesting a shadow visit. Please do not request a shadow visit if your child has already had a shadow visit at Tech, whether that shadow visit was set up through this website or by visiting a friend. What is a shadow visit? Your child will spend a day or a half-day at Oakland Tech with a student host. Your child stays with his or her host for the entire visit. What does my child get to see? Your child will see all the host’s classes during the visit (plus lunch, if the visit includes lunch period). Your child will have one host and will visit only that host’s classes. You can use the form below to make certain requests about your child’s host, including requesting that your child shadow a friend. Please note: Since your child will be attending classes, he or she will be expected to act with polite courtesy. When can my child shadow? Shadow visits take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays through March 25. We do not schedule the visits; you and the host will choose the specific date. Please do not wait until the last minute to request a shadow visit, since we may not be able to fill host requests and hosts may not be able to fit you in their schedules.

Do not fill out this form without consulting your child. Please do not make assumptions: check to make sure that what you are requesting is what your child really wants. Once a shadow host is assigned, the assignment will not be changed. We cannot guarantee that we will be able to meet any specific requests, including the gender of your child’s host, but we’ll do our best.

Your child can have only one host. If you are requesting to shadow a friend, your child will spend the day with that friend and we will not assign another host to show your child other classes or programs.

 

Prior to the Shadow Day:

 

  1. The visiting student must fill out a Shadow Day Visitor form. Bring it to the visit date and turn it in at the office. (The host student does not fill out anything on this form.)
  2. The host student must fill out a Shadow Day Host Student form. The host student must have his or her teachers sign it, before the shadow date. Please give the teachers some reasonable amount of warning (in case there’s a test or something). A couple of days to a week is fine. You do not have to get the principal’s office to sign before the shadow date, but you can if you want.
