During the 2020-21 school year, the normal bell schedule for Oakland Tech has been suspended as we adjust to distance learning necessitated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The normal weekly schedule for distance learning is modified during weeks when there is no school on Monday or Friday, and the classes students attend change with each quarter. Current class schedules are posted on the front page of the Oakland Tech Web site, so students and families can always find the correct schedule at at www.oaklandtech.com.
The calendar for the full school year is displayed below, with a link to download a printer-friendly PDF of the calendar.
This new system is somewhat complicated, so lower down on this page we provide an explanation of how the schedule is structured. Below that is a table showing the schedule of quarters and marking periods for the 2020-21 school year.
Oakland Tech operates on a block schedule, which means that half the classes are offered face-to-face with the teacher on one day, and the other classes are offered face-to-face the next day. We call the first day an “A Schedule Day,” and the next day a “B Schedule Day.”
On Wednesdays, the face-to-face classes are shortened, and all classes meet in the morning. We call this our Minimum Day. This provides planning time for teachers after lunch, and time for students to work on assignments off-camera. For Minimum Days, the correct way to read the schedule is to focus on the times shown in the Wednesday column. They are different from the times for the other days.
For weeks that include a Monday holiday or a Friday non-student day (also known as a Professional Development Day), the Wednesday schedule is omitted, and the A day and B day are shifted over by one. This allows the first day of the weekly class schedule to always to be an “A Schedule Day” and the next day to be a “B Schedule Day.” The 2020-21 school year calendar ∫ shows these adjustments. A days are yellow; B days are green; and Wednesday minimum days are orange. You can download and print the color-coded calendar if you want to have a hard copy on hand.
The school year calendar shows the classes that meet each quarter. Classes scheduled for periods 1, 3, 5, and 7 meet during the first quarter, are paused during the second quarter, and then resume during the third quarter. Classes scheduled during Periods 2, 6, and 8 meet during the second and fourth quarters. Period 4 is designated as Advisory for all students, with Zoom meetings throughout the school year.
OUSD’s distance learning plan divides each semester into two quarters, with high school students enrolled in three or four classes per quarter. Each quarter has two Marking Period (MP) cutoff dates, one at the midpoint of the quarter and one at the end of the quarter. Below is the schedule for the four Quarters and eight Marking Periods set for the 2020-21 school year.
