Academy Structure & Selection Process Update for 9th Grade Families

ArchivedComments Off on Academy Structure & Selection Process Update for 9th Grade Families

Each year, Oakland Tech strives to create an academy selection process for 9th grade students and families that’s clear and transparent. To that end, we want to share some important updates regarding our academy structures and selection process.

We have decided to not recruit a Biotech 10th grade cohort for the 2018-19 school year. After piloting a 10th grade cohort this year, we realized that we are not currently in a position with our partnerships to fully support students. The program will continue in the 11th and 12th grade next year. Any student who is currently enrolled in the Biotech Academy will still have the opportunity to work with Biotech Partners.

The impact for next year is that the overall number of pathway seats available to 9th graders was lowered. Academy Directors have been working diligently to solve the conundrum and this is why there is a delay in the original timeline that was shared and publicized around the academy selection process.

Given this context, we are happy to announce that the Computer Academy and the Fashion, Art & Design Academy have opened more spaces to accommodate more students. We are still placing students who completed applications and expressed interest to the best of our ability with priority given to students who fit the profile mandated by our partnership with the California Partnership for Academies.

As we work through this context, we’ve made adjustments to our timeline:

  • Week of Feb. 5 – 9: Academy Directors will continue meeting to determine placements.  They will be conducting follow-up interviews with students whose preferences were unclear.
  • Week of Feb. 12-16: Academy acceptance interviews will be conducted on Wednesday Feb. 14 (and, if necessary, at other times throughout the week.)
  • Week of Feb. 19-23:  Academy Notifications will be sent out via OUSD student emails.

We are sorry for any lack of clarity about this process from the information that was sent out on Dec. 5th via email and featured on the school website.

We thank you for your patience and for entrusting us with your child’s education.
