The City of Oakland, OUSDs Coordinator of Transportation and I had a meeting focused on student safety off campus—particularly travel across 51st and Broadway. City Councilman Dan Kalb, his assistant, Lisa Jacobs, and several other city department representatives attended the meeting. It was productive and reassuring to have so many people involved in addressing this ongoing concern. Part of the meeting took place at the 51st & Broadway intersection where we observed students and cars before and during lunch. Based on our conversation and what we saw directly, immediate safety changes are going to be put in place and then we’re going to develop some long-range solutions. Come to the PTSA meeting on Monday evening at 7 PM to hear more.
Congratulations to Mr. Ji!
Mr. Kevin Ji, one of our math teachers, has earned his National Board Certification. This is a rigorous process and an excellent professional development experience. Teachers must exhibit a deep understanding of their students, content knowledge, use of data and assessments, and effective teaching practices. They must also show that they participate in learning communities and provide evidence of ongoing reflection and continuous learning. It is the most respected professional certification available in K-12 education. Way to go, Mr. Ji, we are so proud of you!
