Bulldog Closet Update & Thank You: A Year In Review from Tech’s School Nurses

A big thank you to the Tech community for helping support and expand the Bulldog Closet!

The Bulldog Closet moved to a larger space this year allowing for more storage as well as greater privacy for students and their families. The room was then transformed by a Tech family that donated their time, paint, and shelving to make the space warm and welcoming.

This year’s annual donation drive raised more than $4000 in grocery store gift cards and donations to the Amazon account. The Closet was also fully stocked by physical donations of hygiene products, clothing, school supplies, and food items appropriate for a family in transition. I’d like to extend my overwhelming gratitude to all the parent volunteers, community members, Tech alum, the PTSA, and staff who donated, worked to raise donations, and stepped up to help in special circumstances.

Due to such an amazing response, the Bulldog Closet is partnering with the Oakland Education Fund to ensure financial oversight, streamline services, and provide tax donation receipts for donors. They will be taking over the Bulldog Closet Amazon account making it easier to order and supply the closet when supplies runs low, or a student needs a specialized item such as a bike lock. With this collaboration the program will also be able to purchase bus passes and Clipper Cards for students and families in need.

Donations to the Bulldog Closet can be made by here. Be sure to write Bulldog Closet in the comment section. Any donations with Bulldog Closet in the comment section will be restricted and can only be used by the program to supply the closet and provide associated services.

Any donations you are able to make are greatly appreciated and be used to provide our students with;

  • Hygiene supplies

  • School supplies

  • Laundry detergent

  • Clothing

  • Food items for the emergency food pantry

  • Specialized items

  • Homelessness assistance

  • Transportation passes

On top of the success of the Bulldog Closet, the Backpack Program has distributed 990 bags of non-perishable food to students and families with food insecurity this year. The Backpack Program not only supports Tech, but also families at Emerson and Claremont. This program has been strongly supported by parent volunteers whose help has been invaluable. Tech has been approved to continue this program for the 2019-2020 school year. Please look for continuing updates regarding enrollment in the program, updated electronic forms of enrollment, volunteer sign-ups, and contact coordinators.

Thank you, everyone! Have a wonderful summer!
