School NewsComments Off on Meet Emily Schoenhofer, A New Counselor at Tech
Emily Schoenhofer also joined the Tech counseling team in August. She works with 10th through 12th graders with last names beginning with Liao-Q.
Q: Where are you from and how did you become a school counselor?
I was born and raised in Ohio. My family and friends are all still there (for the most part). I moved here from Cincinnati, Ohio in June because my boyfriend got a great job at a start-up. I’m still adjusting to life in California (mainly just the traffic), but I’ve been having a grand time seeing all the sights! I have a master’s degree in school counseling from Wright State University in Ohio. This is my 6th year as a school counselor. The time has flown by.
Q: How did you end up at Tech?
When I heard we would be relocating to the Bay Area, I started my job search last February. Oakland Tech, a school I’d never heard of, just happened to be looking for a school counselor. I perused the school website and Googled around to get a feel for the school. I was impressed by what I learned, so I applied, and here I am!
Q: What’s your favorite thing about your work?
My favorite thing about what I do is seeing kids overcome incredible obstacles. These could be emotional, educational, familial — you name it. Teenagers today have complicated lives. It’s wonderful to be able to see them grow and overcome adversity or reach a challenging goal. It’s the best feeling.
Q: What do you like to do for fun?
I’m a proud cat mom. I binge true crime podcasts and TV shows. I love traveling, even if it’s just for a weekend. My upcoming travel agenda includes Yellowstone and Charleston, SC.
