Kicking Off a New – And Challenging – School Year From Our PTSA President

Dear Bulldog Families:

It’s hard to believe that the new school year is just around the corner when the last school year was disrupted by illness and uncertainty that slid into one of the strangest summers of our lives.

The coming year will present a lot of new challenges, and the PTSA has been thinking a lot about how to meet these challenges.

In particular, we’ve been thinking about COVID-19 and distance learning, and equity and anti-racism. This year’s events have really highlighted the interconnected nature of these topics, and we want to address them. We have plans for parent and voter education and equity and antiracism workshops. We plan to bolster support for our social/emotional programs and develop a better relationship with our Special Education families. We will continue to support our college and career center in new ways and have set aside a budget for teacher software and professional development.

With distance learning, we want to increase our sense of community by building school spirit and really want every family to be a part of our community through the PTSA. To support that, particularly in this difficult time, we have reduced our membership fees to $5 per person, and sponsored memberships, which are free, are available to all teachers, parents, and students who need them. Families who are interested in supporting this free membership program are invited to sponsor memberships.

In the coming weeks, we will debut our new School Spirit Store, which will allow families to get sweatshirts, T-shirts, and other items online and shipped directly. We will be hosting parent-teacher coffees, both virtual and in-person when we can.

We have our first PTSA meeting on August 18, 2020 at 7:00 pm. If you would like to come to the meeting, please email me at so I can send you the Zoom password.

Although traditional events like the Ninth grade BBQ and the teacher appreciation breakfast can’t happen as planned, we have some new ideas. We have gifts for the teachers (I won’t spoil it here) that speak directly to our moment. We invite incoming Ninth graders to use the hashtag #oaklandtech2024 on social media so that they can find one another and start to make connections in advance of August 10. Mr. Price and Mr. Rey are planning other ways to welcome our new students.

Please enjoy these last few days of summer. Tech administrators will be in touch soon about technology needs, last year’s yearbook, registration, and other start of school business.

Please be sure you are following @othsconnections on Instagram or Facebook, and please join our PTSA listserv by emailing your name, email address, and relationship to Oakland Tech to

I look forward to seeing you soon!
