Semifinalists in the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the names of the approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 66 annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

For Oakland Technical High School:

  • Cameron Schofield
  • Benjamin Sommer

These students have earned the opportunity to continue in the competition to become National Merit Scholarship Finalist and recipient of some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships, worth more than $31 million that will be offered next spring.

In order to qualify as a National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist, students must take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) as a high school junior. The highest-scoring entrants in each state are chosen in proportion to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors. In total, the Semifinalists are less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors.

As a Semifinalist, they must advance to Finalist standing before being considered for a Merit Scholarship award. Semifinalist must be fully endorsed by the school principal (or designated school official). Submit a scholarship application that includes information regarding their academic record, extracurricular and community activities, leadership abilities, employment, honors and awards. Semifinalists must have an exemplary academic record, submit an essay and earn SAT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.

National Merit Scholarship winners of 2021 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July. These scholarship recipients will join more than 345,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title.
