A Message From Principal Fairly: Graduation Info, Book/Technology Returns, and Gratitude to the Oakland Tech Community

SpotlightComments Off on A Message From Principal Fairly: Graduation Info, Book/Technology Returns, and Gratitude to the Oakland Tech Community

Greetings, Bulldogs!

As I look back on the year that we’ve been through together, I feel a deep sense of gratitude to every member of our Oakland Tech community. Part of what keeps our school strong over the years is the way that parents, families, coaches, and neighbors pull together to support our students and teachers. This year, especially, we have experienced pressures, challenges, and successes that we hadn’t dreamed of before. To recognize just a few of these:

  • The students who learned how to use their social media skills and then taught us how to form connections online. We learned that there is a balance between being visible all the time and taking breaks with cameras off. And we learned what a joy it is when an individual does show that smile on camera.
  • The parents and families who have been holding things together at home to provide learning spaces for our students. This hasn’t been easy. We have seen the stresses of providing for the family, coupled with separation and loss, and the way that these stresses have affected our families.
  • The teachers who took lessons and materials for their courses and created new and beautiful ways to engage students at a distance. We have experienced the benefit of our teachers’ creativity and care, and we recognize that this new type of teaching has required hours of one-to-one contact, extending past the end of the typical school day.
  • The staff and partners who have learned to keep track of so many new types of needs that have come out of our working in a distance learning environment. Through that work, we have been able to keep the school operating and stay in touch with our students, teachers, and families.

We are stronger now, holding a deeper sense of empathy for the many living situations that we’ve seen. As we hold onto both the strength and the empathy, they will help us prepare Oakland Tech to have a solid reopening in August. We will have these new tools to meet students where they are and engage them in the joy of learning. Our goal will be to hold onto all the skills that the students have continued to develop this past year, provide new skills, and create meaningful work that will keep us all moving forward.

FINISHING CLASSES, RETURNING MATERIALS: MONDAY – THURSDAY

Monday through Thursday this week are the make-up days for returning textbooks and materials to the Textbook Room, 1:00-3:30pm. This includes all chromebooks that were borrowed from Oakland Tech. All students need to complete the Tech Check survey this year to see if they are eligible to receive a chromebook through #OaklandUndivided that they can keep.

#Oakland Undivided Tech Check Survey.

Scroll to the bottom of that page and hit the NEXT PAGE button to start the Survey. It will take about 10 minutes to complete the Survey.

Students who are studying for AP exams in June will be able to return the materials for their AP classes after the exam.

CONGRATULATIONS, GRADUATES!

We are so proud of our seniors who will be graduating this week. And we give a special shout out to Oakland Tech’s 2021 Valedictorian and Salutatorian: Ahmed Abdul Rahman Muhammad and Cameron Schofield. Oakland Tech’s Virtual Graduation will be presented on Wednesday, May 26, 6:00-8:00pm. All members of the Oakland Tech community are invited to view this prerecorded event online; no special software will be required. The school will send out the video link to all families through ParentSquare on Tuesday.

Oakland Tech’s four in-person ceremonies will be held on the football field on Friday and Saturday, May 28 and 29. These will be limited-capacity, adhering to social distancing and other county health guidance. Tickets are required to attend these ceremonies, and they can be picked up at the Textbook Room on Monday-Thursday, 1:00-3:00pm. Seniors must have all their grades submitted in Aeries and their counselors’ approval of their graduation status in order to pick up their tickets. All textbooks and borrowed chromebooks must be returned, unless the senior is still using them to prepare for AP exams. Seniors who are attending the in-person graduation must submit the Self-Screening Form prior to the ceremony. The in-person ceremonies will be live-streamed so that family and friends who can’t attend will still be able to view the event.

Mr. Fairly, Principal

IN-PERSON GRADUATION: Our in-person ceremonies will be limited capacity according to county health guidance. Traditionally, each of our counselors has presented the graduates she has worked with, and this year’s in-person ceremonies will be organized in the same way.

GRADUATION TICKETS: It is with a heavy heart and much disappointment that we have to announce that OUSD has decided that we are only able to give 2 tickets per student for the graduation. We completely understand your frustration and disappointment. This decision is completely out of our control. Just know that your family will have an opportunity to view your child’s ceremony via live stream as well as view the virtual graduation on May 26. We will provide more information on the social media platform and link to the graduations. For those who are still planning on attending we will do our best to provide you all with the best and safest experience possible.
