Family and Student Feedback on the 2021-22 Proposed Bell Schedule

During the week of May 4, Principal Fairly talked to parents and students in two separate forums about next year’s Bell Schedule for Oakland Tech. Here is what Mr. Fairly shared with the community on May 11 and please see the slides embedded below:

Thank you to all who participated in our Student and Family Forums about Oakland Tech’s new bell schedule last week. Your comments and questions are valuable, and we appreciate the insights you offered. Here is a copy of the slide deck, including the key questions and answers that were provided. Based on the type of positive feedback that we received, we will not need to hold a follow-up forum this week. Further information will be provided on oaklandtech.com as it becomes available.

Among the goals of the new schedule:

  • Seven periods will give students more opportunities to take elective and dual enrollment courses. It also provides more opportunities for students to make-up credits from courses they might have failed.
  • The block schedule on Tuesday-Friday provides more time for students to work in groups and finish work during class.
  • Classes will have time to go deeper into relevant topics.
  • Classes will have time for students to apply what they are learning and create ways to improve our community and society.
  • The total number of instructional minutes for students is 64,800 for the school year, which is the standard state requirement in a typical year.
