Celebrating 100 Years of Oakland Technical High School
Centennial Gala Weekend Wrap-Up
This past Memorial Day Weekend, Oakland Technical High School commemorated 100 years as a preeminent educational institution, serving much of North Oakland and beyond. Tech alumnus, from near and far had choices of attending any of seven Centennial Celebration events, May 22-25, 2015.
The sunny afternoon began with an outdoors assembly at Tech’s front entrance. Three esteemed educators shared their reflections and historical perspectives about Tech. Next were several group guided tours throughout the hallways, rear buildings and premises of Tech, interspersed with nostalgic commentary and obscure side stories. The last stop was at the auditorium with displays of artifacts and memorabilia sales, and for the premiere showing of the 1.5 hour film “Oakland Tech – One Hundred Years”. Technites gathered and reconnected in the evening ambiance of an intimate art gallery. Alums indulged in hors d’oeuvres, a no-host bar, wine sampling, photo ops among former classmates, and some dancing to the DJ’s oldies tunes.
Bulldogs from all generations regathered in front of Tech. The catered lunch included ribs, links, three varied salads, and unlimited trips to the ice-cream cart. Merriment included a Tech History Quiz with Jamba Juice coupon prizes, group photos organized in five year spans, Tech apparel and memorabilia sales, and again dancing to the DJ’s oldies tunes.
Saturday, May 23 – Wine Tasting at Pro Arts
Technites enjoyed a spirited afternoon sampling local wines at this return venue.
Sunday, May 24 – Brunch at Pican Restaurant
Technites dined and reminisced in the intimacy of a reserve room, at Pican’s on Broadway in Oakland’s Uptown.
The Centennial pinnacle event was the Gala on Sunday evening at the historic Downtown Oakland Rotunda, with tables adorned in purple and gold. A Tech students ensemble played dinner music during the upper level cocktail hour. The evening commenced with three performances by current Tech drama students, including acrobatics, a short play, and soliloquy. Two buffet lines served an array of salads, hot dishes and deserts. The Class of ’65 engaged the audience in several familiar Tech cheers and songs. The evening showcase was the presentation and ceremonial induction of 41 Tech alumni and staff, spanning many decades, into the first Tech “Hall of Honor”, see http://oaklandtech.com/staff/centennial/hall-of-honor/. The raffle top prize winner received a seven day vacation stay at one of several popular resorts. The dance party got under way with the DJ playing tunes from back in the day. It was a most memorable evening.
Monday, May 25 – Golf
Technites Tee’d up for a morning best-ball scramble at Lake Chabot Golf Course in Oakland.
