Guitar Class gives students the opportunity to explore strumming patterns, finger picking, classical technique and music reading, music theory and TAB. Students will play a wide variety of folk, rock, classical and world music and will perform on the winter and spring concerts. Students play together as a class most of the time, with weekly opportunities for small group work. Guitar is open to all students and may be repeated.
Piano students learn keyboard technique, music reading and music theory through a variety of folk, pop and classical music. We use Alfred’s Adult Piano Method along with selections from our extensive collection of classical, jazz, folk and pop solos and duets. Every student will be able to perform a solo on the Steinway grand piano in the auditorium in front of an audience in the evening on the last day of class. Most of the activity in this class is independent practice at the student’s individual keyboard, so it is a good class for students who enjoy working independently on projects. Piano is open to all students and may be repeated.
In the fall of 2019, choir returns to Tech after an absence of many years. Students will develop the choral skills of posture, breathing, support, resonance, and articulation, along with music reading and music theory. The choir will perform at the winter and spring concerts, at the OUSD Orchestra Festival and at school functions. Repertoire will include a variety of folk, pop, classical and world music selections. Choir is open to all students and may be repeated.
The Jazz Band performs the music of the African Diaspora; funk, swing, Latin and R&B with an emphasis on solo improvisation. The band performs frequently at festivals, athletic events and school and community functions. Students should practice 2 to 3 hours a week outside of class. Interested students can participate in combos where they can focus on improvisation. Students often have the opportunity to receive individual or small group instruction from visiting professional mentors. Jazz Band is an advanced group for students with prior experience and music reading skills. Most students will have taken advantage of the music opportunities available in the Oakland schools consistently since 4th grade. Many have participated in summer programs such as OUSD Summer Jazz, Young Peoples Choral Orchestra, or the Lafayette Summer Jazz program. Interested students should make an appointment to audition with Mr. Allen in the spring.
